Watermelon Caristan F1

Until recently, many people in Russia could not imagine that they could grow watermelons on their plots. These fruits have always been associated with distant southern countries, where the sun shines almost all year round and the weather is hot.

But everything changes, the work of breeders does not stand still, new covering materials and technologies appear, allowing to provide young plants with watermelons with relatively comfortable conditions for development. Still, the main role in the possibility of growing watermelons in relatively northern regions was the emergence of new ultra-early varieties and hybrids.

By the way, the debate about what is better to plant: varieties or hybrids of watermelons has not ended. Most farmers and producers of agronomic products prefer the seeds of watermelon hybrids, and even preferably of foreign origin. Indeed, it is often only with their help that one can get really early products and be competitive in the market. Among such hybrids, Karistan f1 watermelon is very popular, due to a whole range of characteristics that are attractive to both buyers and sellers.

Hybrid description

The hybrid variety of watermelon Karistan was bred by the breeders of the Dutch company "Syngenta Seeds B.V." at the very beginning of the XXI century. In our country, it has become known since 2007, and in 2012 it already fell into the State Register of breeding achievements of Russia. For the hybrid Karistan identified two main regions of admission - Lower Volga and Ural. Thus, experts have assumed that the Karistan watermelon can be grown in the open ground of the Chelyabinsk and even the Kurgan region.

Seeds of this hybrid are found for sale mainly in large farm packages of 100 or 1000 pieces, packaged directly by the manufacturer, Syngenta company. The color of the watermelon seeds Karistan in such packages is reddish due to their pretreatment with Thiram fungicide.

The hybrid belongs to one of the earliest ripe watermelons. The first harvest of ripened fruits can be made already 62-75 days after the appearance of full germination. Due to such early maturity characteristics, Karistan watermelon can be grown in the earliest terms using a variety of covering materials. And you can sow the seeds directly in open ground, but even in this case, the fruits of this hybrid, as a rule, have time to ripen before the onset of cold weather.

Comment! The Caristan hybrid watermelon is often successfully grown in greenhouse conditions, and for many northern regions this may be the only way to produce watermelon products in its area.

Karistan watermelon plants have great growth power and high productivity potential. The main lash has an average length. Medium sized leaves are distinguished by weak dissections and various shades of green.

Hybrid Karistan has a good fruit set, even under the most adverse weather conditions. Resistance of Karustan watermelon to the main pathogens is at a good level - we are talking mainly about fusarium wilt and anthracnose. Also, this hybrid is characterized by particular resistance to sunburn.

When growing watermelon Karistan on Bogar (land without irrigation), the yield is from 150 to 250 kg / ha. The first two harvests already yield from 55 to 250 centners of fruit per hectare. And if you use high technology of cultivation, including, above all, drip irrigation and regular feeding of plants of Caristan, the yield can be easily brought up to 700 centners per hectare. And we are talking about watermelons, which retain a decent appearance, suitable for sale.

Characteristics of watermelons

The fruits of the Caristan hybrid are one of the most common types of watermelon, named for the variety, Crimson Suite. They are characterized by the following characteristics:

  • The shape of the watermelons is oblong, you can call it oval.
  • The size of the fruit is medium and above average, the weight of one watermelon is on average 8-10 kg, but it can reach 12-16 kg.
  • The main color of the shell is dark green, on this background lighter streaks shimmer, then diverging, then tapering.
  • The bark is thin, sometimes turning into the middle.
  • The flesh of watermelons is bright red, sometimes turning into dark red, very juicy, crunchy with a dense structure.
  • Tastes are rated as good and excellent.
  • In the fruits of the hybrid Karistan contains from 7.5 to 8.7% of dry matter and from 6.4 to 7.7% of various sugars.
  • Seeds are small, black.
  • Safety is good, watermelons are able to maintain their marketable qualities within two weeks after harvest.
  • Fruits of the hybrid Karistan tolerate even long-term transportation.

Features of growing

For residents of most regions of Russia for the successful cultivation of watermelons, the most important thing is to meet the deadlines when there is enough heat and sunshine to fully ripen watermelon berries. To speed up these processes apply:

  • Intensive care technologies that suggest the additional use of growth stimulants and a variety of fertilizers, both mineral and organic.
  • Shelter watermelons throughout the growth or only in the first phase of development of protective materials: agrofiber or various types of film.

For an accelerated start, they also use a seedling method of cultivation, without which it is almost impossible to grow full-fledged watermelons of this hybrid in the middle zone.

Growing seedlings begins with the warming of Karistan watermelon seeds in water with the addition of stimulants at a temperature of + 50 ° + 55 ° C. You can wait for the appearance of small sprouts, and you can immediately germinate the seeds, placing them 2-3 pieces in separate containers filled with light soil. Ground for watermelon seedlings should contain up to 50% of sand with the addition of peat and sod land.

Seeds germinate at elevated temperatures, about + 30 ° C. To create an additional greenhouse effect, each container should preferably be covered with glass or a piece of film.

Attention! The seed depth for watermelon Kristan should be about 3-5 cm.

After the emergence of seedlings seedlings shall be taken out in the most lighted place. The temperature may be cooler, but not below + 20 ° C. Gradually, it is desirable to bring it to + 15 ° + 16 ° С. Already a month after the emergence of seedlings, the young plants of Kristan watermelon can and should be planted in a permanent place. If weather conditions do not allow this, then additional shelters need to be constructed, since the root system of watermelons is very sensitive. And with the growth of seedlings to transplant it will be harder and harder. The optimal age of a seedling for transplanting is 20-25 days and it should have about 3-4 true leaves.

When planting seedlings of the hybrid Karistan, it is necessary that each plant should have at least 1 square meter of land, and better even more.

Sowing watermelon seeds Karistan right into the ground is preferable, because the plants grow much faster and look more resistant to all sorts of adverse factors. But, unfortunately, without shelters this is possible only in the southern regions of our country.

For northerners, sowing of preheated and germinated seeds into a tunnel film greenhouse with additional protection with a nonwoven covering material is quite suitable. The timing of such seeding may vary from the beginning to the middle of May. The bed for sowing is pre-sprinkled with boiling water. In this case, the watermelon Karistan will have time to develop and bear ripe fruits by the end of July - August.

Important! Keep in mind that the most delicious and long-lasting watermelons grow in areas where sand prevails in the ground.

Reviews gardeners

Watermelon Karistan is most often grown by farmers, primarily because its seeds are packed and sold in fairly large quantities. But sometimes they fall into the hands of ordinary summer residents and then the results exceed all expectations.

Larisa, 48 years old, VolgogradIn our farm, we always calculate in advance which seeds to use for planting in order to get the maximum profit. Last season, the Karistan f1 watermelon hybrid was chosen. We paid 3100 rubles for a pack of Syngent’s seeds. There were 1000 seeds in a pack. The seeds were red because they were treated with Thiram fungicide, due to which the hybrid acquires additional resistance to the most common diseases. The seed packaging of this hybrid weighed about 42 grams. We use the seedling method to speed the ripening of the fruit. In mid-April, the seeds were sown one by one in seedling cassettes in a greenhouse. Cassette cells were filled with a special professional soil for seedlings Klassman. By mid-May, the grown-up seedlings of Karistan were transplanted into the open ground under the film, for protection from possible cold snaps at night. Seed germination was recorded at 99%. In our farm we use drip irrigation. So, the yield on drip irrigation was 80 t / ha, while on boghara it was only 30 t / ha. Watermelons began to ripen 60 days after the emergence of shoots and had a stunning juicy and sweet taste. They are also stored well. That is, we are satisfied with our choice. Review textIgor, 52 years old, Bryansk region You can’t call our region famous watermelon growing. Nevertheless, I have managed to grow tasty and sweet fruits for more than 10 years. I tried many varieties and hybrids. Last year, I accidentally from friends fell from a dozen seeds from a Dutch hybrid Karistan. I chose for them the sunniest and warmest place on the southern slope. I built a small film cover on top and sowed seeds that had spiked into the holes, covering each seed with a glass jar. In terms of all this happened around mid-May. I did not remove the jars until the leaves began to rest against the walls. When the long-awaited warmth was established, he began to take off the shelter, but sometimes he left it for the night. When the whips began to develop, let them on a vertical trellis. And what was my surprise when the flowers began to form very early - literally after the fourth or fifth leaf. Had to work a little bee, because the local insects do not pay much attention to the watermelon flowers. But the fruit began to magnificent. Each of them had to be tied up separately. My record from this hybrid is 5.5 kg watermelon. For our edges it is just the only one.

Conclusion

Watermelon Kristan can interest many keen gardeners with its early ripening periods, unpretentiousness and at the same time high taste qualities. This hybrid is able to yield even in difficult conditions.
